Entranced and Terrified by the Strange Women and Their Macabre Stories: Solo Exhibition by Khairul Azmir Shoib (Meme)
TAKSU Singapore, 23 June – 31 July 2011

TAKSU Singapore is pleased to announce Entranced and Terrified by The Strange Women and Their Macabre Stories, a solo exhibition by Khairul Azmir Shoib (Meme).

Entranced and Terrified by The Strange Women and Their Macabre Stories showcases paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations by Khairul Azmir Shoib (Meme), inspired by works of four women artist/writers who have been the subject of his studies for many years: Holly Black (The Chronicle of Spiderwicks), Camille Rose Garcia (The Magic Bottle), Audrey Niffeneggar (Her Fearful Symmetry, The Adventures), and surrealist painter Leonora Carrington. These figures are known for their inherent style and influence to the gothic ethos. A true fan of the tradition himself, Meme expands his visual language to the realms of dreams and the subconscious. With Entranced And Terrified By The Strange Women And Their Macabre Stories, Meme takes us further into the other side of what seemed to be an innocent fairytale, into more complex labyrinth of strange stories and tales of deeper mysteries and nightmares.

Khairul Azmir Shoib, or better known as Meme, was born in 1975 in Taiping, Perak, Malaysia. As a “writer of pictures”, Meme constantly strives to create series of visual poetry that record silent conversations between the self and the others. His oeuvre threading along with the macabre often deny or betray any categorization, simply outlandish in its own myth. Apart from lecturing in universities in Malaysia, Meme had participated in various group exhibitions in institutions and galleries in Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia. Among his past solo exhibitions are: Fairieality (2006), and Post Gothic Dreams (2009). Meme received his BA of Fine Arts from UiTM, Shah Alam, Malaysia in 2000, and MA (Fine Art and Technology) in 2004. He was the recipient of Juror’s Award from Young Contemporary, National Art Gallery KL in 2000; and 1st Prize in Life Drawing Competition from National Art Gallery KL in 2005.

Meme currently lives and works in Kuala Lumpur.
