FLOATING DESIRES: Solo Exhibition by Budi Agung Kuswara (Kabul)
TAKSU Singapore, 11 – 25 October 2012
TAKSU Singapore is honored to present Floating Desires, the first solo exhibition of Indonesian artist Budi Agung Kuswara (Kabul) in Singapore.
Floating Desires, Kabul’s latest series of work, started with his memories of growing up by the shores of Balinese beaches: the sensory experiences of playing in the water, swimming in the midst of the ocean, and the joy of surfing smoothly, dancing with the waves. Floating Desires, to Kabul, is the desire for survival, to keep himself on the surface, to resist the gravity that pulls him down. To him, not only that this experience occurs when one is underwater, this applies for anyone from any walk of life too. The desire to continue to live, the need to stay conscious, and the struggle to stay afloat are rooted in our existence.
BUDI AGUNG KUSWARA (b. 1982, Indonesia), also known as Kabul, left his hometown Sanur in Bali in 2002 to pursue Fine Art studies in Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta. Drawing inspiration from the diverse sociopolitical issues he has seen and experienced during his stay in Yogyakarta, and employing the Balinese tradition of storytelling, Kabul composes imageries that speak of a wide range of issues -all told with a hint of satire, a handful of puns, and fully loaded with symbolic references. Since 2003 to date, Budi Agung Kuswara (Kabul) has participated in numerous group exhibitions in various galleries and art spaces in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Denpasar, Magelang, as well as in Manila, Italy, San Francisco, and United Kingdom. Kabul presented his first solo exhibition entitled i.Self in 2008. Kabul lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
