Agus Sumiantara
b. 1980, Indonesia
Agus Sumiantara – ‘Kacrut’, is an established Balinese artist whose creative work is largely inspired by the 1980s.
Kacrut’s canvas is loaded with meaning and representations, often symbolic of the life experiences he gained during a period of battling with drug dependence. His art process follows a certain method – he focuses on simple objects, unravelling and scattering their shape and form, then captures these fresh visuals for the camera, and transfers the final image onto canvas.
An alumni from Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Denpasar (ISI Denpasar), Agus made a name with his hyperrealist, realist and pop styles. With numerous international exhibitions lined up, his talent is widely recognised and appreciated. In 2010, he was awarded Top 30 Finalist The 2005 Sovereign Asian Art Prize by The Sovereign Art Foundation in Hong Kong.
