Dot Dot Dot Line Line Line

Solo Exhibition by Agnes Lau

Agnes Lau Pik Yoke (b. 1990, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Dasein Academy of Art graduate in Fine Art) makes her first solo exhibition at TAKSU Kuala Lumpur. Agnes has always been fascinated with the art-making process that according to her gave her a sense of tranquillity.

After completing her studies, Agnes delved into her art practice which involved the search of harmony in everyday life. The ordinary yet ignored objects or activities from daily life plays a role in her study and she tries to stimulate a reflection through art-making processes. Her work lies between systematic and non-systematic processes within a determined time and space. She incorporates both the conscious and unconscious mind, resulting in various forms to take place in her work, juggling between drawing, painting and printmaking on different materials.

“dot dot dot line line line”, a show of works with endless repetition to force the audience to an experience of their own creation of time and space. As the repeated movements in themselves have no specific definition to the audience, they can engage the works freely. However, the true meaning towards the artist lies in the creation itself, a feeling of satisfaction in which Agnes has in accomplishing the works as a set in the beginning. It is a physical ceremony where Agnes puts visuals of dots and lines on a surface; uses a minimum repertoire of visual elements aiming for maximum visual intensity. Language is now unnecessary. The stress in her works began to form when she started putting the pencil onto her canvases; the dots and lines started to create rhythm – a textural system. The endless repetition performs a ceremonial passage which subconsciously moves forward but consciously knowing its heights and widths in relation to the surroundings.
