Fawwaz Sukri
b. 1987, Malaysia
Born in Selangor, Fawwaz Sukri’s interest in comics prevails in his art. With a BA and diploma in Fine Art from UiTM Malaysia, Fawwaz Sukri creates vivid worlds of drama and color.
Growing up in the 1990’s, Fawwaz describes himself as an artist “straddling the local and international”, as he was consistently exposed to western pop culture. He states that his current paintings highlight the global phenomenon of “cultural homogenization” via the media and the internet. Working heavily through painting and collages, Fawwaz crafts intricate and energetic landscapes for viewers to get lost in. With quirky displays and comic expressions to produce melodramatic flair, his work often shows a chain of events pertinent to the main event occurring in the “big picture”. Describing his paintings as “remixes”, heavily inspired by hip-hop culture and popular oldie songs, Fawaaz “remixes” these influences, applying them to current-day issues.
Fawwaz has had several solo exhibitions and joined group exhibitions around the world in Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan. In 2018, he won the Art against AIDS Award for the Annual Professional Artist art competition hosted by ONE (Juror’s Award), Malaysia, and the Young Gun Award organized by HOM Art Trans, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2017.
