Syed Fakaruddin is a local artist from Setiu, Terengganu, Malaysia. In 2007, he was offered to do his Fine Art Diploma at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Alor Gajah in Malacca and furthered his study to receive his Fine Art Bachelor’s degree (major in sculpture) in 2012 from UiTM Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia.
Right after graduating, he went on to become a full-time artist at Batu Belah, Klang for a year before settling for a bigger space in Ara Damansara. He is also one-third of an art collective, ‘SarangBatu’ which was founded in 2014 by him and two other young artists, Azizi Latif and Fazrin Abd Rahman. The three budding artists had played a significant role in the development of Malaysia contemporary art, respectively.
Syed Fakaruddin is inclined toward equipping himself as a multi-disciplinary artist by actively challenging himself in various techniques, less-conventional medium and thought-provoking ideas which are strongly drawn from his surroundings.
Being receptive to nature, Syed Fakaruddin uses metaphors in his art in an attempt to evoke emotions, offer different perspectives and often challenge his audience’s comprehension in a self-reflective manner. He sees himself as a creative story-teller that soaks up interesting stories based from his own experience being both the muse and the observer.
Syed Fakaruddin was named as one of the grand winners of Malaysia Emerging Artist Award 2019 (MEAA) and selected as the finalist for ‘Bakat Muda Sezaman’ contest organised by the National Visual Arts Gallery in Malaysia. Currently, he is practising art in Ara Damansara.
