Umibaizurah Mahir Ismail

b. 1975, Malaysia

Born in Johor, Malaysia in 1975, Umibaizurah Mahir Ismail is recognised as one of the country’s pioneering contemporary ceramic artists, celebrated for expanding the possibilities of ceramics beyond its traditional role into sculpture and installation. Her multidisciplinary practice transforms familiar figures, animals, domestic objects, and fragments of the urban landscape into richly symbolic forms that explore the shifting relationship between people, place, and identity.
Working across ceramics, steel, found materials, and mixed media, Umibaizurah creates vibrant, playful compositions that invite curiosity before revealing deeper reflections on consumerism, material culture, environmental change, and the rapid transformation of contemporary society. Her works often balance humour with unease, using visual irony and imaginative narratives to question how personal and collective identities are continually shaped by social, political, and economic forces.
While deeply rooted in ceramic traditions, Umibaizurah consistently pushes the medium into new territory through experimentation with scale, installation, and unconventional material combinations. Whether inspired by everyday objects, childhood memories, or the evolving urban environment, her practice encourages viewers to look beyond the familiar and reconsider the values and systems that shape modern life.
Umibaizurah graduated with a Bachelor of Art and Design (Ceramics) from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Shah Alam, in 2000. Her works have been exhibited extensively across Malaysia and internationally, including Singapore, Japan, Korea, China, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Dubai and Pakistan and acquired by both institutional and private collections internationally. Her contributions to contemporary ceramics have earned numerous accolades, establishing her as one of Malaysia’s most influential voices in the medium. Her achievements include recognition in Prestige Malaysia’s Top Under 40: Poised for Power and the National Art Gallery Malaysia’s Young Contemporaries awards.
