Muhamad Aqil was born in Kluang, Johor in 1997. He graduated with a Bachelor (Hons) in Fine art (majoring Sculpture) at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam, Selangor
In 2019 he began sculpting stone and rediscover he loves for stone carving while finishing his undergraduate degree. It started from the internship program that he followed located in Yogyakarta Indonesia when he was still in the bachelor’s degree program. He had the unique experience of sculpting stone for two months in Studio Kandang Banyak. This beautiful studio there is only basic equipment for stone carving, but his teacher is very experienced and able to produce custom made equipment himself. The process of carving each stone is not just a task, it is a profound experience filled with inspiration and meaning.
In November 2021, he was invited to the 2nd International Marble Art Camp (2021) at Langkawi, Kedah, which is organized by the National Art Gallery Langkawi. For me, sculpting is a complex and organic process which involves much contemplation at all stages, as well as trust, patience, intuition and surrender as the stone reveals itself and a form begins to materialize. Once the design emerges, a sense of momentum stirs as the piece comes alive.
