Fazreen Sukri
b. 1996, Malaysia
With a bachelor’s degree and master’s in Fine Art from UiTM Malaysia, Fazreen uses his art to explore his Kelantan dialect. Wanting to illuminate an aspect of the mundane, Fazreen found inspiration looking through his old school exercise book; captivated by its repetitive nature, the development of his distinct style began here.
With a focus on the displacement of the Kelantan dialect within modern society, Fazreen playfully contemplates the balance between order and chaos in an abstract manner. Through intense repetition and layering of text, while also experimenting with colors, lines, textures, and more, Fazreen displays simultaneous endurance and discipline in his work, creating a dynamic interplay and tension between structured discipline and spontaneous expression. Describing it as, ‘writing-as-scribbling-as-painting’, the collision of all these opposing forces creates a harmonious dance, inviting viewers to contemplate the tensions and complex relationships among these elements.
Fazreen has participated in various exhibitions. In 2022, he had his solo exhibition, ‘More Than Words’, in Kuala Lumpur; most recently his work was included in the annual ‘Locals Only! 2024’, exhibition at TAKSU Kuala Lumpur.
